I understand posture is variable, but what is a good starting point for my posture?

An easy way to find a simple starting point is to stand up against a wall so your shoulder blades are touching the wall evenly. Now, you can set your disc tension such that when your shoulder blades “slouch” off the wall, the disc will indicate this improper change in posture and vibrate. When the shoulder blades are against the wall and your chin is parallel to the floor, your posture is ideal. At Perseus Athletics, we call this the “home” posture position.

How do I know what my correct posture is?

Posture is variable and the novelty of this shirt is that the posture sensitivity can be adjusted on the fly.  Experiment what particular sensitivity that you enjoy or require for your particular task.  At times, you may want the shirt very sensitive by turning the disc clockwise, and at other times, you may want to lessen the sensitivity by depressing the central tab and spinning the electronic wheel counter-clockwise.  This is described in detail in the PostureTek video on our website if you enjoy visual explanation.

How long will it take to learn proper posture?

Biofeedback learned behavior studies have shown that it can take many days to understand and appreciate a new habit, but unfortunately, the data is scarce. At Perseus Athletics, we believe that conditioning or maintenance of biofeedback learned behavior is very important. In other words, even if you feel that you have mastered your posture, it would be advisable to use the PotureTek garmet on a regular basis to ensure a permanent postural improvement.

It seems like my activation disc is vibrating too much certain activities?

You will be amazed how many times throughout the day that regular activities promote a shoulder slouch and trigger a vibratory biofeedback. When you first begin using the PostureTek garment you may want to decrease the sensitivity vibration to allow yourself to become accustomed to proper posture. As your body is trained to develop better posture, increase the sensitivity of the activation disc on a regular basis until you achieve constant proper posture.

Despite proper placement of the electronic disc, it still does not vibrate.

The electronic disc assembly runs on 3 LR 44 batteries.  They are designed to last for several months of use.  However, batteries can have unpredictable life span at times.  The number one cause of the shirt not vibrating would be drained batteries.  Also, the material is comprised of 95% cotton and 5% spandex, which may cause stretching due to regular use and needs to be washed on a consistent basis.  The PostureTek shirt works best when is fitted tight on the body.

What type of batteries do I use and how do I change them?

The PostureTek garment electronic assembly operates with the use of 3 LR 44 watch batteries. The batteries can be purchased on our web site or at a store such as a pharmacy.  On the back side of the electronic disc assembly, you will find 2 small screws.  Use a small screwdriver to remove these small screws and the battery casing.  Remove the 3 LR 44 batteries and replace them with the new ones with the positive side up.  Replace the casing and securely tighten the screws.  At this point, replace the assembly and begin to enjoy your garment once again.

Should I wear the shirt while exercising?

It is well documented that exercise without proper posture can cause a multitude of injuries. Current strengthening techniques are based on the principle of stable posture and core strength while training. Your PostureTek garment can help ensure proper training. The more stable and aligned your body is, the more effective you will be at strengthening and preventing injury.

Should I wear the PostureTek garment during pilates, yoga, or meditation?

The principles of these non-impact meditation type activities are based on a solid posture base.  Maintaining proper posture increases your capacity to perform proper breathing techniques for which these activities are fundamentally based upon.

Can children or my older relatives use the PostureTek garments?

Proper posture is an essential musculoskeletal concept and position which should be taught at an early age and continuted throughout life.  In fact, there are certain postural disturbances such as Scheuermann's disease, which affect adolscents that require strict attention to maintaining proper posture.

Would the PostureTek garments treat scoliosis?

Only a trained practitioner can treat documented scoliosis.  Scoliosis can be a serious issue and at times may require more formal treatment such as bracing or even corrective surgery.  However, appropriate posture training can be effective and supplement any formal treatment process for the treatment of scoliosis and other spinal deformity.

How do I wash my shirt?

The PostureTek garments are made of 95% cotton and 5% spandex to allow for washing. The first priority is to remove the activation disc prior to washing. Wash in cold water, then hang dry. When you are ready to wear the garment, replace activation disc and resume training with your PostureTek garment.

How long will my shirt last?

Your shirt is durable. It can handle many wash cycles. You will find it similar to any undergarment, needing to be replaced depending upon the amount of use. Adhering to the care instructions printed on the garment is important for longevity.

Wear PostureTek discreetly under normal daily work clothes. This will help you realize the extent of your improper posture and deliver the required signal to recover proper alignment.

My electronic disc assembly won't snap back into place.

To ensure proper placement of the electronic disc, make sure that the small recessed area at the bottom of the assembly matches up with the spring-loaded mechanism on the actual shirt.  Once this is matched up, a direct force should produced a snapping sensation, which signifies the electronic disc is now secure on the garment and ready for use.

I have replaced the battery, however, the electronic assembly still does not work.

Make sure that the electronic assembly is placed in the housing of the shirt or tank appropriately.  While you are first getting used to your garment, it is advisable to remove the assembly several times with the shirt or tank off to get used to snapping the electronic assembly into the housing appropriately.

If I am a female, am I welcomed to use the shirt instead of the tank?

Absolutely.  The shirt is designed as unisex fit and if you are more comfortable wearing the PostureTek unisex shirt with your regular tank, that is perfectly acceptable.

Are the PostureTek garments indicated in the use of rigid postural deformities?

Chronic and proper posture and certain underlying bone diseases, such as osteoporosis can develop into a fixed postural state.  Often these fixed or non correctible postural disturbances can be progressive and although there is little data to support postural strengthening in the role of preventing further progression, it would seem very reasonable, in fact recommended, to prescribe postural training in patients afflicted with these deformities.

What if I experience significant amount of pain while wearing the PostureTek garment?

Certainly, training muscles can cause at times relatively pronounced muscular soreness.  If the user experiences unusual soreness while wearing the PostureTek garment, it is advised to decrease the amount of use of the garments and/or lower the biofeedback sensitivity.  If pain continues despite these simple measures, appropriate medical attention would be indicated.
