When Laser Science, Inc. introduced the VSL-337 nitrogen laser in 1983, it set a new standard for laser ease-of-use. Over the years we introduced several new lasers based on the patented sealed plasma cartridge design of the VSL-337, but with added features and improved performance. The VSL-337ND-S is our latest high-performance, full-featured nitrogen laser.

Performance

The VSL-337ND-S nitrogen laser emits pulses of 4 nsec in duration at 337 nm in the UV with a pulse energy of 300 µJ. Peak power is 75 kW and the average power is 6 mW at 20 Hz. The pulse repetition rate can be varied from less than one pulse per second up to 30 Hz, and up to 60 Hz in burst mode. A unique feature of the VSL-337ND-S is the optosync port, which provides a high speed TTL signal derived from the laser itself resulting in subnanosecond jitter. In designing the VSL-337ND-S, we paid careful attention to RFI/EMI shielding resulting in a CE compliant laser.

Beam Quality

The output of the VSL-337ND-S is near-diffraction limited producing a collimated beam. The excellent homogeneity of the beam is shown in the beam profile. This beam can be focused to better than a
3 µm spot producing very high peak power and an energy density of 4.5 kJ/cm2.

Flexibility

The VSL-337ND-S nitrogen laser features trigger and burst input ports plus sync and optosync output ports. All of these ports are TTL compatible. The optosync port is capable of driving a 50 ohm load. These ports make it easy for the researcher to devise and implement experiments involving precise and complex timing schemes.

Turnkey Operation

The VSL-337ND-S is air-cooled and incorporates our patented, sealed plasma cartridge. No hookups for flowing gas or coolant are required. No alignment is necessary as the laser resonator optics are factory adjusted and are an integral part of the plasma cartridge. The laser needs no warm-up. The VSL-337ND-S is ready to go. Just plug it in, turn it on, and start working.

Modular Design

The laser plasma cartridge module is polymer encapsulated and contains the energy storage capacitors, the spark gap switching element, the plasma tube, the electrodes, the preionizers, and the factory aligned resonator mirrors. In other words, this field replaceable unit incorporates all the laser components that are subject to deterioration with usage. Replace the cartridge; get the performance of a new laser at a fraction of the cost!

Long Life

The plasma cartridge is warranted to maintain at least 70% of its energy for twenty million pulses or two years, whichever occurs first.

Options

Both fixed wavelength and tunable dye lasers are offered to produce pulsed visible laser light. We offer a fiber optic adapter, a variety of optical fibers, laser to microscope adapters, and modular holders for filters, attenuators, energy meters, and other optical components.
