Partners
in Education
The Partners
in Education Program (PIE) is a culturally-driven, comprehensive theatre
arts education program developed by MRT to serve one of its finest missions:
"To educate, challenge and inspire audiences." The ostensible goals of
PIE are:
- To provide students
in the Merrimack Valley, Nashoba Valley, and Southern New Hampshire
with a comprehensive theatre education curriculum
- To give access
to the power and imagination of the theatre to as many students and
young people as possible, particularly those who have been traditionally
excluded from the arts
- To use the theatre
as an educational tool that helps students gain the type of knowledge
and critical thinking required in today's society
- To inspire, influence,
and introduce students to new ideas through drama
This year PIE is
sponsored by The Ronald M. Ansin Foundation, Fleet Bank, 3M Corporation,
First Essex Bancorp, Lawrence Savings Bank, Rogers Foundation, Stevens
Foundation, Starwood Foundation, Webster Foundation and the Cultural Councils
from the following municipalities: Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, Groton,
Dunstable, and Billerica.
Middlesex
Community College
As part of our ongoing effort to reach out to the community, we've established
a strong bond with another partner in education, Middlesex Community College.
Every semester our professional artist/teachers provide exciting new course
offerings on the Lowell and Bedford campuses and MRT directors work with
MCC students to mount productions of classic and contemporary theatre
literature. Additionally, MRT Guest Artists assist the faculty with on-site
lectures developed "to bring the arts into the classroom." This unique
collaborative effort creates a "win-win" situation for both institutions
and reinforces their mandates of providing educational and cultural resources
to a wide range of students.
Renew,
Recycle, Reuse our SETS
As an environmentally aware cultural resource, MRT has established this
program to provide school systems with set pieces--such as flats, floors,
and custom designed scenery--for use in their own productions, at no charge
to the school. In lieu of simply throwing our sets in the dumpster, we
choose to pass on these professionally crafted pieces to schools who often
cannot afford to buy or build similar pieces. Since we cannot store or
deliver these pieces, schools interested in this program should contact
the Education Department at least one month in advance of "strike."
