Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Microscopic Monitoring and DNA Culturing

Phase microscopes are utilized to read plaque samples taken directly from individual patients.  We look for three distinct signs when microscopically monitoring plaque:  the amount, movement and type of organisms present in the sample.  This screening tool allows us to view the presence of periodontal disease bacteria and accompanying inflammatory cells. The image is projected onto a video monitor to provide educational value for each client.

Bacteria are present in the normal flora of the mouth.  When the load becomes too great for the immune system to handle, they proliferate, mature and tax the host.  Oral bacteria are transmissible between intimate partners and can infect and/or re-infect each individual.  We advocate couples screening for periodontal disease bacteria especially when we see a lack of improvement in one individual after treatment.

A laboratory culture of oral bacteria and DNA is another tool Riverview Dental Associates of Concord uses to determine a patient’s disease status and risk for periodontal disease.  Cultures are taken and sent to a laboratory specializing in this test.  The doctor can then best determine what local and systemic antibiotic and treatment protocols are best for each individual.
