Gallaudet University

Gallaudet University is a federally chartered, quasi-governmental[1] university for the education of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, in Washington, D.C. It was the first school for the advanced education of the deaf and hard-of-hearing in the world, and is still the world's only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. A small number of hearing students with demonstrated mastery of ASL are admitted to the undergraduate program each academic year. Hearing students are encouraged to apply to the graduate school. The university was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a notable figure in the advancement of deaf education.

Gallaudet University is a bilingual community in which American Sign Language (ASL) and English exist side-by-side. While there are no specific ASL requirements for deaf and hard-of-hearing applicants to undergraduate admission, many graduate programs have sign language proficiency requirements.[2]
Gallaudet University is in one of the fastest growing counties in the state. According to Census Bureau estimates, the population of DC has declined slightly. The total number of people living in the county dropped by -1.5%, from 572,059 in 2000 to 563,384 in 2003.
