FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
I can think of no better way to begin this, my final letter as the President of your Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell (IUAAL), than by lifting up all that you have done during my six years in this office. Your support has meant so much to me, our Board, and all the UMass Lowell students and departments that have benefited from scholarships and grants. Your generosity (with on-going membership, supporting our fundraising events, and taking advantage of your IUAAL membership benefits) has provided us with even stronger resolve of the necessity to preserve and grow the active, professional volunteerism of our Independent University Alumni Association.
Over the past two years, the UMass Lowell administration’s friendship has made it easier for our Alumni volunteer association to reach out to even more Lowell campus’ students. They have offered resources to support not only the daily labors of our two-person office staff and Board of Directors, but the transformation of our relationship. Today, we work aside them in our common missions to help support as many students as possible seeking scholarships through their college years.
And during this transition in our working relationships, you continued to enable us to engage in work such as; the administrational duties of IUAAL ‘s volunteer Corporation, the Board meetings, the IUAAL Scholarship & Awards Night, the excellent management of the Endowment Fund, and the development of yet two more scholarships. One in memory of Queena Flomp Traggis (1936–2007) and another in memory of Professor Ernest P. James (1919–2009).
Twice now, we have had the privilege of joining Chancellor Meehan at the Allen House to attend the Commencement Eve Celebration for UMass Lowell. This annual University fundraising event is a wonderful time; and especially nice for us to enjoy mingling with department heads whom we have helped over the years through our Grants Program benefitting their students.
Our 2008-2009 IUAAL Scholarship & Awards Night was held January 29, 2009. We again celebrated terrific hard-working student’s and parent’s accomplishments with a dinner and scholarship presentations. We were joined by our Distinguished Alumni Award winner and college Department Heads to whom we had awarded this year’s grants for their department projects. This is the second year; we were honored by the attendance of the university’s Chancellor Martin Meehan, who is a past Distinguished Alumni Award winner.
Our Endowment Fund portfolio performance continues to be impressive. The considerable care with managing and dispensing income from the portfolio continues to serve UMass Lowell students extremely well.
For a complete list of the 12 donor funds participating in the endowment and the 83 recipients of the 2009 scholarships, go to www.IUAAL.org and click on Scholarships in the menu at left.
