When it comes to application performance management and measurement of
application health, there are only two metrics that affect all business applications in some or other way:
response time and availability. This is the reason that response time and availability metrics are included in service level agreements as well as design objectives for development of applications. Despite this importance of response time of an application, many organizations cannot check it at user’s locations. Most of the time, the IT help desks ignore slow response time complaints from the end user by saying that it looks fine on their end.
APM vendors offer only specific products for measuring and monitoring the response time of popular applications. As a result, several different APM vendors and products are typically used and many internal applications are unsupported. Until now, there hasn't been a single product available that can support all the different applications within the IT infrastructure of the organization. The cost of purchasing and maintaining several different products to support a total application environment would be simply too high.
