Starmet Quality System

Through the use of cross functional continuous improvement teams tasked with tracking performance against corporate goals, Starmet is proud to have achieved both ISO 9002 certification (through TUV America, certificate number 121009043, dated February 12, 1998) and certification by the United States Army's Contractor Performance Certification Program (better known as the CP2 program). Starmet has embraced the idea of breaking down our business into distinct processes that can be documented, measured and improved. The words "As measured by" have become company bywords as we strive for continuous improvement.

Continuous improvement and quality system certification are keys to maintaining long term customers. ISO 9002 certification is akin to the 'Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval', and provides a level of confidence in our ability to provide a quality product to the customer. These 'third party' assessments indicate that Starmet has achieved major milestones in our quest for metallurgical excellence.

The tools and techniques of quality management involve listening to the voice of the customer, from defining the customer's expectations and planning the production process, to process analysis for continuous improvement. Certification to the ISO 9000 international standards for Quality systems means the company has the "system" to understand and deliver exactly what the customer asks for. We analyze our customer's purchase order to fully understand their wants and needs. We control our processes, train our employees, and maintain our equipment in order to assure the customer gets what they want, when they want it. Through the system built on the ISO model, we have positioned ourselves for success in satisfying the customer.

Inspection and Test Capability

Starmet has extensive capabilities for inspection and testing as a supplier to the aerospace, defense, medical and commercial industries for over 50 years. Below is a summary of those capabilities.

    • Dimensional Inspection:
Starmet employs a variety of gauging systems to verify the manufacture of high precision products. Several coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are used to verify location, profile and true position requirements to tolerances as tight as 0.0005 inch. Starmet has designed special inspection gauging, for use in production of the Army's 120mm tank ammunition. Our gauging department maintains a wide variety of over 3000 gauges.
    • Mechanical Testing:
Starmet has several load frames, up to 50,000-lb. capacity, for use in tensile and compression testing. A variety of hardness testers are available, including micro-harness. Several cyclical load frames are available for fatigue and charpy testing.
    • Nondestructive Testing:
Starmet's NDT capabilities include; radiography, dye penetrant, ultrasonic, and leak testing. A 10' x 12' X-ray vault with a 160 kV tube provides radiographic capability for a wide variety of part geometry. Starmet employs an in-house Level III for RT, PT, and UT.
    • Chemical Testing:
Starmet corporation maintains an extensive chemical analysis laboratory which includes such equipment as ICP and Atomic Absorption.
