As a major supplier of ultra-clean
titanium and cobalt alloy powders to the orthopedic industry,
we understand the importance of cleanliness and consistency
.Our
reputation goes into every surgical prosthetic implant.
Starmet's patented PREP® (Plasma Rotating Electrode Process)
has produced powders from virtually every metal and alloy where
spherical shape, cleanliness and high yields are required. PREP®
is the only known powder production method that does not introduce
ceramic material, and since there is no change in chemistry from
the original input stock, high purity is not only maintained
but assured.
Through the success of the PREP® production method we
are a key supplier to these diverse industries:
MEDICAL: Cobalt and titanium powders are used in medical orthopedic
prosthetic devices to create a porous surface into which bone
tissue can grow.
AEROSPACE: Titanium powder is used
in the fabrication of low density Metal Matrix Composites (MMC)
to create aircraft engine components that are lighter and more
fuel efficient.
BEARING STEEL: NM-100 bearing steel powders satisfy the need
to create components that have the optimum resistance to wear,
galling, corrosion and oxidation in engine components under high
continuous temperature use.
RARE EARTH METALS: Rare earth powders such as neodymium, gadolinium,
erbium and dysprosium are ideal for cryogenic and magnetic refrigerator
system components.
Our current development activities focus on the advancement
of powder metallurgy techniques for consolidating fine titanium
powders into semi-finished components. Materials that are difficult
to fabricate by casting or forging are ideal candidates for this
powder metallurgy approach.
HIGH PURITY METAL POWDERS KEY FEATURES
- High sphericity with excellent reproducible packing properties
for subsequent consolidation (typically 65% tap density)
- High purity with a marked absence of attached satellites
and nonmetallic inclusions
- Free-flowing with a highly controllable median particle size
distribution within a specified range
- High yield in narrow particle size distributions which can
range from 18 to 325 MESH (1000 to 45 microns)
- Capacity for large volume production of steel and stainless
steel powders for photocopy and specialty applications
