Billerica, MA -- September 9, 2002 - AST Products, Inc.
(AST), a world leader in water- based coatings for medical devices,
announced today the completion of a licensing agreement with Occam
International BV of Europe. This marks the 7th licensing agreement
year to date for AST.
The agreement is a worldwide non-exclusive licensing for AST's
LubriLAST coatings on Occam's vascular balloon catheters,
Vigor, for percutaneous transluminal cardio angioplasty (PTCA).
AST's LubriLAST coating, a lubricious coating that is part of AST's
BioLAST medical coating technology platform, will give the
catheter more lubricity for easier insertion and thus will help
ensure the success of the procedure.
Occam International B.V. develops, manufactures, and sells PTCA
angioplasty catheters, Stent Delivery Systems and PTCA-related accessories.
Prior to forming a partnership with AST, Occam had been working
with another well-known medical coating company. However, it chose
to partner with AST. In addition to providing close support during
regulatory submissions, AST offered Occam a unique water based coating
technology that was easier to use and more cost effective in comparison
to the original technology.
"Partnering with Occam International is quite exciting in
that it offers us the chance to really improve patient care by eliminating
some of the risks involved with cardio vascular balloon catheter
insertions. We pride ourselves on our solid partnerships with clients,"
said AST's VP of Business Development, Dr. Ih-Houng Loh. "We aim to give our
clients the best quality medical coating available on the market
and to assist them in any development issues."
AST Products, Inc. (AST) headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts
offers water-based, solvent free coatings for medical devices. Since
1989, AST has partnered with numerous companies through licensing
agreements for its BioLAST medical coating technology. AST has a
strong history in advanced research and development with an emphasis
on providing customized, innovative coating solutions. The company
also provides state-of-the-art tools for processing and measurement
and coatings and surface modification technology for industrial
applications, processing equipment and services and surface analysis
instruments. AST licenses its coating technologies on both an exclusive
and non-exclusive basis. For more information about AST Products

Billerica,
MA -- May 13th, 2002 - AST Products, Inc. (AST),
a world leader in water-based coatings for medical devices, announced
today the completion of a licensing agreement with Portex Limited,
Inc. AST's proprietary
BioLASTT technology platform offers cost effective specialty medical
coatings that are both environmentally friendly and easier to use
than other technologies on the market.
Portex will use AST's LubriLASTT, a coating developed within
the BioLASTT platform, to provide exceptional lubricity and superior
durability.
Portex Limited, Inc. is an expert in the manufacture
of single-use, sterile, medical devices.
The company has over 50 years experience in the precision
engineering of single-use products and every Portex product undergoes
stringent tests to ensure high quality standards for all customers.
With two major operating units and a worldwide distribution
network, Portex focuses in the following areas: Airway Management,
Arterial Blood Sampling, Pain Management, Needle Protection and
Surgical Drainage.
LubriLASTT is a patented lubricious, biocompatible,
polymer coating that is uniquely formulated as an aqueous-based
solution. LubriLASTT
provides excellent lubricity on surfaces, is durable, and can incorporate
a variety of bioactive agents.
LubriLASTT is one of the six specialty medical coatings offered
under AST's BioLASTT coating technology.
All coatings within the BioLASTT platform can be customized
to impart specific surface properties such as lubricity, anti-thrombogenicity, antimicrobial,
anti-restenosis and anti-encrustation, to name a few.
"I believe this agreement between AST and
Portex Limited will be beneficial to both parties," said Ih-Houng
Loh, AST's VP of Business Development. "We are thrilled to be experiencing such growth and believe
it is attributable to both our partnership approach and our BioLASTT
technology."
AST has indeed experienced tremendous growth
in the last year. The
number of licensing agreements has more than doubled year-to-date
in comparison to 2001. A
key to AST's success is its commitment to companies through a device's
development/design phase.
By partnering with its clients through the critical design
process, AST assists companies in their adaptation of its proprietary
coatings to their application before committing them to a licensing
agreement. Offering
clients access to its coating as well as to AST's considerable technical
expertise in the design phase, is very cost-effective and allows
for the identification and eradication of potential device or coating
problems before the completion of the design.
