Distinguished Alumni Award
Since 1978, the Alumni Association has annually recognized an alumnus/a worthy of receiving our Distinguished Alumni Award. All recipients have been members who have not only distinguished themselves by their accomplishments, but also are alumni of our member institutions. This year, the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell takes great pleasure in recognizing our thirty-second Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. James L. Swartz.
Dr. James L. Swartz was born in Lowell, MA in 1939 of middle-class immigrant parents; father from Russia and mother from England. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1957and attended Lowell Technological Institute, now UMass/Lowell. Life circumstances caused him to experience a number of false academic starts, but he received a BS in Chemistry in 1965. He had a brief career as a chimney sweep, complete with top hat and tails. At about this time of his life he was encouraged by Dr. Truman Light to do graduate work and he did so nights to earn an MS and Ph.D in Analytical Chemistry from Northeastern University in Boston in 1971 and 1974 respectively. After successful careers with The Foxboro Company working in process analytical chemistry and with Valmet Automation, where he worked in several technical and management positions in the paper industry, he retired from the pulp and paper industry in 2001 and has now embarked on a new part-time career in the medical field, investigating the chemistry of
calibration materials for medical imaging devices such as CAT and
MRI scanners.
Dr. Swartz has traveled widely and by various modes of transportation. He has ridden an elephant in Nepal, a bicycle in China, watched the annual crane migration in Bhutan, ridden a motorcycle across most of Canada into Alaska and sailed a catamaran across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain to
Puerto Rico.
Dr. Swartz is married, has two sons and lives in Upstate New York with his wife Karen, his dog Milo and six cats.
