The Lessons The Instructors The Company Free Stuff Buy Stuff

There are a million different types of guitar lessons out there. For the most part people seem to pick up a guitar for a few weeks or months and put it away in the closet next to the weight set and the ice skates. Why? Well one reason is that it looks a lot easier than it is, and good guitar instruction is hard to come by.

Most people will go out and buy a guitar lesson book, usually one that caches their eye. Then take it home and realize that they don’t even understand the concept of pitch, so how in the world are they going to get their guitar into tune. They’ll spend a month or two practicing out of tune and most likely not even the type or style of music they like. That’s why it’s short lived! Although in the same breath, guitar books are an excellent reference, and you can pick up a ton of knowledge from them.

Some people will go out and seek a guitar school, now this is a little different, and a lot better. In a guitar school you’ll have an instructor to get you in tune and started. The bad part of a guitar school is that you learn what the instructor is teaching. The teacher will show you how to play guitar, but remember it will be generic. This is only because it has to be A guitar school has an average of 30 students at a time so the option of that one on one is slim to none.

The next popular method now is guitar lessons on computer software. Now the companies that put this stuff out really know their stuff about computers, but they’re not guitar players or teachers. They do however use professional guitar instructors for reference when building the software. They claim that it is interactive, but if you get stuck or are not getting something in the lesson, you still have no one to ask. Again you will be learning what’s been out on the disk no more no less.

It’s the same with guitar instruction on videos, although you can pick up a lot from this type of instruction, you’ll still only be learning what’s on the video. The actual percentage is you’ll pick up about 23% of what was put on the video. Guitar videos do work in their own way, and I have seen some great tapes, but nothing takes the place of some one that will be there for you when you need them.

Private Guitar Lessons

This is one of the best methods for learning how to play guitar, or if your seasoned pro this is the way to go. Private guitar lessons are categorized by any type of lessons where there will be consulting and personalized instruction involved. This can be going to a weekly guitar lesson or getting them in the mail.

With personal guitar lessons you’ll get the most out of your time. Why? Because it’s geared toward you, and not a group of students like guitar books or methods. With your own guitar teacher you get one to one advice and consulting, and a guitar lesson plan that fits your style of musical taste. The big factor here is the communication that you have with your instructor, so if you are having trouble or stuck in a rut they can pull out.

The fall back of going to weekly guitar lessons is the limited time you have with your instructor. If you have a problem or a question you have to wait for your next lesson to resolve it. Another area of trouble is a hectic routine, let’s see how about life in general, but to name a few how about kids, work, school, family and on and on.

  • So trying to set up a guitar lesson once a week can be crazy!
  • Travel time can be a problem also, the time it takes to get home from work or school then off to your guitar lesson can be impossible.
  • Money is another issue, private guitar lessons run very high, and are usually only for a half-hour. So by the time you get there get into tune and chitchat you have about ten minutes with you guitar teacher. That’s not a lot of time for about $15 to $45 a week.
  • Practice times don’t match up, normally when you’re warmed up and ready to learn you’re not at your lesson. How many times have you sat in front of teacher and felt like you were wearing mittens?

What you should look for in Guitar lessons.

  • Price.
  • Consulting all week or month long, you should be able to get your teacher on the phone for help any time you need to. If you can then you just wasted all money you spent that week.
  • Personalized Guitar lessons. Make sure you learn what you want to learn. Not the teachers favorite music.
  • Option to work at home. You will progress ten times faster with the option to take the guitar lesson home and learn it there.
