What is the DoggieDay Pet Service franchise opportunity?

DoggieDay Pet Service provides a fully operational professional pet service franchise that can be run from a person’s home. The primary business of the franchisee is to provide in-home pet care for dogs, cats, and other small animals. Franchisees will also have the opportunity to open a DoggieDay Play Center in their market.

Our franchise program offers new and existing pet care providers several advantages over other franchise opportunities:

  • Software to manage the business

  • A brand that represents award winning, professional and flexible levels of service
  • Ongoing training and support to make your DoggieDay franchise the best it can be

What are the services that you currently offer?

We provide a comprehensive variety of pet care services to meet pet owner’s varied needs, including dog walks and playgroups, visits with cats and other small animals, and aquarium cleaning. We bundle these offerings into 20 minute, 30 minute, 1 hour, and custom time frames (i.e. for pets staying at local hotels), as well as offer several visits per day while pet owners are away. In addition to pet care, we also help our clients with chores we can do when we visit their house, i.e. water plants, collect and send mail and packages, pick up pet food, and even turn on and off lights to make the home safe for the pet and contents of the house.

What are the necessary qualities that DoggieDay Pet Service looks for in a potential franchise owner?

Ideal franchisees have two main characteristics – a love of pets and a love of business. The love of pets is a key attribute, since we are looking for owner/operator franchisee who will love the ability to visit their “new best friends” in any weather and under any circumstances. The love of business, and the skills to succeed are key to making a DoggieDay franchise successful as an operation. Beyond those two key components, we are looking for enthusiastic people who can gain the trust of clients, plan complex logistics on a daily basis, and be ready to do almost anything for their clients when they call. Finally, we are looking for people who have had success in the past in business, whether you are a small business owner, sold lemonade, or left your corporate job for a different lifestyle. There is no pre-requisite on any one specific issue, but we need and expect franchisees to demonstrate their skills in some way.

What do I have to pay DoggieDay after I get started?

We charge an 8% royalty on your gross sales. As you get started, there is a minimum monthly fee that is made. Once the amount of revenue grows to the point where royalties are higher than the monthly payment the percentage fee will be paid. As part of the DoggieDay franchise network, you will not need to determine these amounts and write out a check to corporate. All payments will be calculated and debited using the 3-D management system, and a statement of your success will be mailed to you with our fees automatically deducted.

Does DoggieDay Pet Service offer financing?

We do not currently offer financing. However, there are several ways to secure financing for this business, either through small business loans or formalized loans from friends and family. We can point you to some excellent sources for both of these options.

Can anyone become a DoggieDay Pet Service franchise owner?

No. We go through a very rigorous screening and selection process. The goal of this process is to make sure that both DoggieDay and our prospective franchisees are comfortable with each other, and that there will be a successful partnership formed. Many of the rules behind franchising have been established to protect the partners.

What type of training and support does DoggieDay Pet Service offer to franchisees?

Once an entrepreneur signs up with DoggieDay, they are invited to a weeklong training in our headquarters city of Boston. There, we will take franchisees through the basics of the business, the culture and mindset of how we deliver service, as well as hands-on training with our customer database. We will also send franchisees out on the road with our experienced Pet Care Providers to see how our system translates into an active working day for our staff.

Why shouldn’t I just open my own pet care service? There are so many people making a living this way?

We believe that the era of mom and pop pet care services is on the wane for a few reasons.

1) Technology to run the business. We believe that customer management software and mobile technology can and will make the pet care services business better. However, individual providers cannot afford to take advantage of these technologies given the small scale on which they operate. As a DoggieDay franchisee, you will get access to these services without bearing all of the development cost.

2) A more mobile society. People move. Across town, across the country, around the world. And they no longer want to leave their pets behind. But finding care for four-legged friends can be tough and frustrating. By being a part of a national brand and network of providers, DoggieDay franchisee can offer the same service customers in other cities and towns will come to expect from us, just as a cup of coffee at Starbucks in the same anywhere you drink it.

3) Rising expectations for pet care. People expect more as their pets become a more important family member. Sixty percent of American households have at least one pet. And well over 80% of dog and cat owners refer to themselves as their pet’s “Mom” or “Dad.” DoggieDay’s professionalism and flexibility allow these “parents” to worry about one less thing while they are working for the “family.”

What is the overall demand for pet care services?

Huge and growing! Pet ownership continues to rise, as does the desire for owners to lavish their pets with care and attention. Currently, the demand for specialized pet care services is far greater than the supply of professionally trained and qualified operators. Often a day care or kennel will open up and the business will be full within the first three months! New kennels are not keeping up with the number of new pets. Also, there is a fast-moving trend of pet lovers who do not like the results of kenneling – illness, excitability, scheduling, loneliness –that cause their pets to act erratically when they return home. They are looking for a service that combines at-home pet care with the added advantage of additional home security, and a true care giver rather than just a stop on a schedule or an unreliable neighbor.

What level of gross sales can I achieve?

The amount of gross sales you can generate will vary from franchisee to franchisee, and is directly dependent on the population of pet owners and economic climate in your territory, your ability to follow our proven DoggieDay Pet Service blueprint for success, and your general desire to work hard and succeed in your business. Should we decide to work together, we will jointly develop a business plan to set goals and measure actual success.

Will I need to hire employees?

Every DoggieDay franchisee is expected to participate in all the daily operations of the business. In the early stages that will mean recruiting clients, scheduling visits, and doing the visits. As the volume grows – and it will grow quickly – you should expect to hire new employees to help with clients visits in addition to your own travel. That means that as you take advantage of DoggieDay’s brand, you will probably need to hire employees.

How do you define territories? How exclusive will they be?

DoggieDay defines a franchise territory as an area of contiguous zip codes that covers a population of 150,000 people. That territory is exclusive to the original franchisee. If an adjacent parcel is requested any adjacent franchisees who may have clients in that outlying area will have right of first refusal on buying that franchise. If they do not buy that franchise, they will be asked to “sell” their clients outside their region to the franchisee in the adjacent franchise.

Can I review your Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC)?

We will disclose our UFOC during our first face-to-face meeting. We do not make our UFOC available to the general public.

How long will it take to become a DoggieDay Pet Service franchisee?

Our franchise process is designed to ensure that both of us have evaluated one another to make an informed business decision before entering into a franchisee relationship. This process will take a minimum of one month just to get acquainted, and up to three months before operations can actually begin. This is in the best interests of both parties, as it assures a good working relationship and a strong commitment on each parties part to make each DoggieDay franchise succeed.
