Andersen Corp. has purchased Des Moines, Iowa-based Emco Enterprises, a privately held manufacturer and distributor of storm doors and related accessories. The addition of the Emco product line marks Andersen’s entrance into the storm door product category. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“Emco is a highly respected, established company whose storm door product line is second to none,” states Jim Humphrey, senior vice president, Andersen Window and Patio Door Group. “Andersen’s addition of the Emco storm door business creates an important complement to our existing window and patio door offerings, allowing us to expand our product portfolio to better meet the needs of all homeowners. It also allows us to balance our efforts between new home construction and home improvement, resulting in a more stable business overall.”

The company’s Emco and Forever storm door products are sold by a number of U.S. retailers, including The Home Depot, which recently formed a strategic alliance with Emco to be the lead provider for its all-season doors.

“It has taken a long time to find the right partner for Emco and we’ve found it in Andersen,” states Larry Engman, retiring chairman and chief executive. “I am leaving behind an exceptional management team; this is a group that my family and I have tremendous faith in to meet Emco’s long-term strategic objectives.”

“Becoming a part of Andersen, a true pioneer in the millwork industry, is an exciting milestone in the evolution of Emco, states J Glasnapp, president. “With Andersen’s leadership and resources, Emco is poised to meet our growth targets and continue to provide even more people with the world’s finest storm doors well into the new millennium.”

Emco, which reported sales between $100 and 200 million for Window & Door’s 2001 Top 100 Manufacturers issue, will be operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Andersen. The company employs more than 700 employees at four facilities in Des Moines, IA, and Luray, Va. Founded in 1932, the company began focusing on storm doors in 1977, when it introduced the Forever storm door line. Emco reports it is the first and only manufacturer to offer thermal storm doors with insulated, energy-efficient, double-pane glass.
