The
UroStat SG is designed to quickly and accurately measure the
specific gravity of urine by refractometry. No pipetting -
specimens are added by pouring sample, followed by automatic
draining. Specific gravity results are read off the digital
display. Results can also be transmitted directly via the
built-in serial interface. A physical characteristic of urine
is the concentration of dissolved substances present in the
urine when excreted. Urine concentration is most often expressed
as specific gravity, a ratio of the weight of urine to the
weight of an equal volume of distilled water. The expected
physiological range is from 1.001 to 1.040 which is the measuring
range of the UroStat SG.
Several methods are available for
the determination of specific gravity. They range from the
most simplistic (color of urine),
to estimates of ionic concentration (urine reagent strips),
to the more precise and accurate determinations produced
by refractometry (UroStat SG) or harmonic oscillation (IRIS
Mass
Gravity Meter). It is not surprising that urine reagent
strips perform poorly, because nonionic substances, regardless
of
their molecular size, are not detected by this method.
On the other hand, the UroStat SG was highly accurate over
the entire
range of evaluation, with 97 percent of its results within
+/- 0.004 of the reference value.
