Because fast turns can be dangerous, turn the Steering Grip slowly. Always lean into the turn. Hold the Steering Grip loosely and be careful not to unintentionally turn it. Practice your technique! When you use the Sidewalk Key or Open Environment Key you must become familiar with the increased turning responsiveness.
- Set out three markers, approximately 10’ apart. Markers should be items that won’t make you slip, trip or tip if you happen to hit them while practicing. A chalk mark is best, or you could try small cones.
- Make sure you have at least 5’ of space on either side of each mark. A level, smooth driveway is a good place to practice.
- Practice gliding slowly around the marks, smoothly and continually adjusting your Steering Grip. Try to make “S” shapes with no sharp corners.
- Make sure to lean into each turn. A good technique is to lean first, then twist your Steering Grip in the direction you are leaning.
- As you gain experience, you can gradually increase your speed. Your ability to turn smoothly and safely should dictate the speed at which you travel.
- The faster you turn, the more you need to lean. Keep your whole body loose and relaxed.
- Unweight your inside foot as you continue practicing. Your inside knee should be loose and flexible.
- Imagine that you are actually holding down the outside Wheel with your outside foot as you turn.
Turning is not a safe option for avoiding hazards. You should never turn abruptly, because the Segway HT could tip sideways and the Segway HT and rider could fall. Instead, you should slow down and stop to avoid hazards, then turn.
