How to Stop Correctly

Be prepared to stop. Be especially careful when approaching or crossing intersecting streets, driveways, corners, doorways, and other areas where you may need to slow down or stop to avoid motor vehicles, bicyclists, or pedestrians.

Whenever riding, avoid abrupt maneuvers. Fast

starts, fast stops, and fast turns are dangerous and can lead to loss of control, collisions, and falls.

  1. To stop moving forward, shift your weight back in a smooth, gentle motion.
  2. Once you stop, stand up straight, with your weight centered over the center of the Platform. If you continue to lean back, your Segway HT will move back.

Practice stopping where you want by slowly riding up to a flat mark on the ground, and stopping without going over it. Make sure that you ride slowly while you are practicing. As you gain an understanding of your stopping distance, you can gradually increase your speed. Always anticipate your need to stop. Your ability to stop safely should dictate the speed at which you travel.
