- Use a helmet.
Segway strongly recommends that the new rider wears a helmet that fits properly with the chin strap in place. Use an approved bicycle or skateboard helmet that provides protection for the back of your head. Depending upon riding conditions and riding experience, consider using additional protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection, wrist guards and knee pads. Wear footwear that protects your feet and provides adequate support and comfort.
- Restart with the Beginner Key.
At first, you should always use the Beginner Key and ride in areas free from obstacles and distractions. To be sure that the new rider is using the Beginner Key, step off your Segway HT, power down, and restart with the Beginner Key before the allowing the new rider to step on.
- Adjust the Handlebar height.
Adjusting the Handlebar to the correct height (above the riders’s elbow when the rider is on the ground; about waist high when the rider is on the Platform) is important for both safety and comfort. Take the time to adjust the Handlebar for each new rider.
- Hold the Segway HT firmly when the rider steps on AND off.
Do not allow anyone to step onto the Segway HT for the first time unless you are there to hold the Handlebar. You will need to brace the Segway HT to keep it from potentially oscillating when the new rider steps on, or from moving when the new rider steps off. Continue to hold the Handlebar after the new rider steps on, until you are certain that the new rider can move forward and back and stay stationary without wobbling.
- Stay within an arm’s length.
Spot new riders until they are comfortable with the basic operation of the Segway HT. Stay to the front and side so that you can reach out and stop or stabilize the Segway HT if necessary. Don't let new riders operate the Segway HT outside of your direct supervision unless they have read this the Riders' Guide and watched the Safety Video.
