A URL consists of the protocol (http://) followed by the domain name (for example, www.pubsnet.com). The protocol and domain name contain all the information necessary for a URL to identify the web server (computer) storing the main folder for a web site.

Once the URL identifies the main folder, the remaining pieces of the URL follow the standard folder, subfolder, and file structure.

Note that the slash (/) separates each level.
