Uniform Resource Locators (URLs)

The purpose of the URL is to provide the exact location of a specific file on the Internet. There are many HTML elements that require you to specify a URL; these elements allow you to reference:

A URL consists of two main pieces:

A URL might look like:

http://www.grantcom.us/IMAGES/logo.gif

The first piece of the URL (highlighted) is the http protocol and the IP address (domain name), which defines how the Internet reaches a specific computer:

http://www.grantcom.us/IMAGES/logo.gif
