You'll notice that when we look at the table from the previous page, there is no explicit label identifying the contents of the table. That's where table captions come in. Table captions (limit of 1 per table, please) convey a title for the entire table.
In reading the previous table, I think you'll agree that the addition of the
caption below makes the purpose of the table much clearer:
Connecticut signers: Roger Sherman Samuel Huntington William Williams Oliver Wolcott |
Massachusetts signers: Samuel Adams John Adams Robert Treat Paine Elbridge Gerry John Hancock |
New Hampshire signers: Josiah Bartlett William Whipple Matthew Thornton |
Rhode Island signers: Stephen Hopkins William Ellery |
The CAPTION element must be inserted immediately after the TABLE element, otherwise it's display is entirely unpredictable:
<TABLE border="1" align="left"
cellspacing="10" cellpadding="0" >
<CAPTION align="left">New England Signers of the Declaration
of Independence</CAPTION>
<CAPTION align="align_value">
align = "left" or "center"
or "right"
